Group of 15 ufological organisations calls on the European Union to make UFOs a priority
In a press release issued on 25 November 2024, the UAP Coalition Netherlands and other groups urge European authorities to tackle the issue of unidentified anomalies head on.
Following the Press Release, a document released by UAP Coalition Netherlands (UAPNCL) and written by civilian UFO groups details the measures requested of the European Union. It lists 4 different areas in which it demands action from the EU:
The establishment of an EU process for the collection, access, analysis, and publication of UAP data
The inclusion of UAPs in EU priorities, policies, and legislation
Prioritising and allocating funding for EU research on UAPs
Establishing information exchange on UAP with other countries
The group justifies its request to the European institutions on the grounds that UFOs may pose a potential risk to aviation and to the health of citizens. The co-authors also believe that the study of UFOs could be beneficial in the technological and social fields.
But the text also shows that the signatories do not know “what are they exactly, where are they from, and what are their impacts on society”.
Signatories request:
the establishment of “a process at EU level for the development and implementation of common standards and protocols for observation data” while, at the same time, proposing that a “study should be conducted about the possibilities and (dis-)advantages of setting up an EU reporting system, databases, web services and organisation, in coordination with national systems.”
“the development of advanced surveillance capabilities to address potential threats posed by UAP”
“an investigation into which and how many of the reported occurrence reports obtained by EASA“
“measures to ensure that the current legislation and ‘just culture’ is implemented in a way to handle reporting of UAP”
“that the EU revises the aviation safety procedures”
declassification of military information by EU member states under EU pressure
“that reporting of UAP observations by astronauts and space agency personnel is made possible, emphasising a stigma-free environment”
“ that UAP are addressed in the EU defence initiatives through key strategic activities of the EU Defence Agency”
“ that the European Parliament develops and implement its own study into the main aspects of UAP and assesses the possible need for changes to or for new priorities, legislation and policies, and for further research”
“the development of advanced surveillance capabilities to address potential threats posed by UAP”
“consideration of UAP in the priorities of the current and future EU research programmes, most relevant regarding UAP”
At a time when the new European Parliament has just been elected and the geopolitical context is tense, with open warfare close to its borders, fears of an isolationist defence policy from the new Trump administration, and intense economic rivalry between the various power blocs, it is to be hoped that parliamentarians still have enough time to take an interest in a phenomenon that has apparently remained elusive for decades.
Moreover, the presence of a British representative among the signatories to these requests from ufological organisations, while the wounds of Brexit are still fresh and the British defence policy tends towards an Atlanticist orientation of European defence, could raise questions.
Edoardo Russo (CISU), responding to a question from Sentinel News, said: "The inclusion of non-EU European countries was discussed and agreed as a point of strength."
The request to fund research into 'UAPs' could also ruffle some feathers. In a political context where far-right groups, often eurosceptical, and are gaining power, the perception that this expenditure would be unjustified could also act as a brake, given that "over a fifth (22.4%) of the EU population living in households with dependent children will be at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2023".
